The Depot Behind the Armor

Anniston Army Depot isn't a garrison — it's where the Army's combat vehicles get rebuilt, mile by mile, tank by tank. If new orders or a new civilian job brought you to Calhoun County, here's what actually matters for the first 30 days.

The Post

This Is a Depot, Not a Garrison

Under Army Materiel Command, Anniston is one of the Army's Centers of Industrial and Technical Excellence — this one for combat vehicles, artillery, and small-caliber weapons. The TACOM Life Cycle Management Command runs the vehicle mission: M1 Abrams tanks, the Stryker family of wheeled vehicles, and other tracked and wheeled combat vehicles get overhauled, upgraded, and in some cases newly built here. Joint Munitions Command's Anniston Munitions Center runs the depot's other job — global storage and distribution of conventional ammunition and missiles.

What that means practically: this is overwhelmingly a civilian and contractor workforce, not a division of soldiers. It's the largest employer in Calhoun County by a wide margin. If your orders brought you here as active duty, you're one of a comparatively small number — the 722nd Ordnance Company (EOD) is one example of the military units actually stationed on the depot. If you're a DoD civilian or contractor, you're the norm here, and your onboarding looks like a federal hiring process, not a garrison in-processing line.

The depot's history includes chemical-weapons storage — it once held about 7% of the nation's stockpile. That stockpile was fully destroyed by September 2011, and parts of the installation remain on the EPA's Superfund list for ongoing soil and groundwater cleanup. Worth knowing, not worth losing sleep over. On a lighter note, the Civilian Marksmanship Program's national Anniston operation sits right on the depot's footprint — the range and store are a genuine neighborhood perk if you shoot.

Where You'll Actually Live

Pick Your Zip Code

Four real choices, honest trade-offs. Calhoun County is small enough that these are genuinely all your options.

Anniston

The county seat and the depot's next-door neighbor, with the deepest rental and purchase inventory in the area. Downtown core, the most services, and the town the depot workforce effectively built — population around 23,000.

Commute: ~10 miles from the depot gates

Oxford

The retail and commercial hub for the whole county — Quintard Mall is the only shopping center between Atlanta and Birmingham. Newer subdivisions, chain conveniences, easy interstate access off I-20.

Commute: 13 miles from the depot

Weaver

The smallest town on this list (population around 2,600) and the one depot and military families gravitate to first — shortest commute, small-town charm, budget-friendly rentals and starter homes.

Commute: 15 miles — the shortest drive on this list

Jacksonville

A genuine college town built around Jacksonville State University, tucked into the foothills of the Appalachians. Live music, a slower pace, and the longest commute here — people who choose it say it's worth the drive.

Commute: About 35 minutes from the depot

The Playbook

Your First 30 Days

01
Confirm military vs. civilian in-processing

ANAD's population is overwhelmingly civilian and contractor. Active-duty arrivals still handle DEERS/TRICARE like anywhere else; DoD civilians and contractors follow a federal HR onboarding path instead — figure out which one you are before you plan the week.

02
Pick your school district before your house

Anniston, Oxford, and Jacksonville each run their own city school system, separate from Calhoun County Schools, which covers everywhere in between. Your address decides the district — confirm it before you sign anything.

03
Move fast on housing near the gates

Weaver and Oxford are the shortest commutes and move quickly at that price point. Anniston has the deepest inventory if you want more options and don't mind a few extra miles.

04
Find your people

The Civilian Marksmanship Program's national Anniston operation sits right on the depot, and the veteran-owned businesses below are the ones actually worth knowing in Calhoun County. Use them before defaulting to whatever's closest.
