Home of the 31st Fighter Wing

Aviano is the only U.S. fighter wing south of the Alps — NATO's forward power-projection base for southern Europe, tucked into the Friuli-Venezia Giulia foothills. PCSing OCONUS is a different animal than a stateside move. This page is your first 30 days, sorted.

The Post

NATO's Southern Flank Starts Here

The 31st Fighter Wing's mission runs three lines deep: secure the base, generate combat airpower, and be ready to deploy and fight from home. Two F-16 squadrons — the 555th and 510th Fighter Squadrons — carry the fighter mission. The 56th and 57th Rescue Squadrons fly HH-60G Pavehawks and Guardian Angel personnel-recovery teams alongside them, and the 606th Air Control Squadron runs the airspace picture the whole wing operates inside.

This is a shared installation, not a purely American one — the Italian Air Force owns the base and holds administrative and military control, with U.S. forces operating under that host-nation arrangement. It's part of what makes Aviano feel different from a CONUS post the moment you arrive: you're a guest on someone else's base, in someone else's country, and the culture here reflects that.

The field itself predates the Air Force entirely — established in 1911 as Italy's first airport, with USAF presence dating to 1954. In the decades since, Aviano's flown combat and NATO operations over the Balkans, Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya — the kind of "close to everywhere that matters" geography that makes this wing NATO's southern-region workhorse.

Where You'll Actually Live

Pick Your Comune

Overseas means almost everyone lives on the economy — there's no on-base subdivision to default to. Five real Italian towns, honest trade-offs.

Aviano (town + frazioni)

The base shares its name and its municipality with the town at the gate — 13 frazioni sprawled from the valley floor up into the foothills, including Piancavallo, the ski resort that's technically part of Aviano too. Small-town Italian life with the shortest possible walk to work.

Commute: The shortest position on this list — several frazioni sit inside the base's own municipal boundary

Roveredo in Piano

A quiet comune of roughly 4,900 people directly bordering Aviano on the way toward Pordenone — the practical middle ground between base-adjacent and city amenities, without Pordenone's size.

Commute: Roughly 10–15 min — it borders Aviano's town limits directly

Pordenone

The region's real city — about 52,000 people, a former textile-and-ceramics manufacturing hub now leaning into culture and food, and by far the deepest rental market and shopping/services base within reach.

Commute: 15–25 min via SR251 — straight from the base's own housing guidance, the widest commute range on this list

Sacile

The "Garden of the Serenissima" — a historic river town of about 20,000 built around two islands in the Livenza, with Venetian-noble palazzos to prove it. Sits on the Venice–Udine rail line, so a train is a real alternative to driving.

Commute: Roughly 20–30 min by car, or the Venice–Udine line if you'd rather not drive

Budoia

A small rural comune (about 2,300 people) at the foot of the Dolomites, bordering Aviano to the north. Quiet, agrarian, mountain-adjacent — you trade commute time for Piancavallo practically in your backyard.

Commute: 20–30 min through the foothills — it borders Aviano directly, just on the mountain side

The Playbook

Your First 30 Days

01
Passport and visa before you fly

A no-fee passport plus an Italian "Missione" visa have to be in hand before you land — start this the moment orders are cut, not after.

02
Permesso di soggiorno + DEERS/TRICARE, week one

File for your permesso di soggiorno as soon as you in-process, and get DEERS and TRICARE Overseas updated the same week — schools, CDC waitlists, and everything else keys off it.

03
Get street-legal before you house-hunt

A U.S. license alone doesn't cover you here — vehicle registration and a driving qualification through the base's licensing office come first. You'll need wheels for house-hunting regardless of which comune you land in.

04
Budget for the on-the-economy reality

First month's rent, a standard deposit, and a separate paint deposit (reimbursable for military members) can total two months' rent up front — the housing office's referral list is the fastest way to a legitimate landlord.
