The Installation
Camp Darby has been the Army's forward logistics hub on the Mediterranean since it was dedicated in November 1952, named for Brigadier General William O. Darby, killed in action in Italy in April 1945. Today it operates as the Darby Military Community (DMC) — a satellite installation of U.S. Army Garrison Italy — spanning Camp Darby itself, the Leghorn Army Depot, and the Pisa Ammunition Storage Area.
The core mission is Army Prepositioned Stock-2 (APS-2): armored and mechanized infantry battalion equipment sets stored and maintained here so units can fly in and marry up with combat-ready vehicles instead of shipping their own gear across the Atlantic. The 839th Transportation Battalion runs the seaport operations that move it all — and most of what else the Army ships through the Mediterranean. The 405th Army Field Support Battalion-Africa and the Air Force's 731st Munitions Squadron round out the installation's other major tenants.
Practically, that means a post built around logistics tempo rather than troop concentration — a small, tight-knit permanent-party community layered under a constant flow of units rotating through for equipment issue and turn-in. Everyone here is either working prepositioned stock, running the port, or supporting the families of the people who are.
