The Base
USS Tripoli (LHA-7) is the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship here, arriving in 2025 to relieve the long-serving USS America. It anchors Amphibious Squadron 11's ready group alongside its dock and dock-landing ships. The Marines who fill those flight decks and well decks — the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit — are based in Okinawa but regularly embark from Sasebo for deployments across the Indo-Pacific.
Off base, Sasebo is genuinely smaller and slower-paced than Yokosuka — about 1,285 acres bordering Sasebo Harbor, in a rural stretch of Kyushu near the scattered islands of Kujuku-shima (99 Islands) National Park. Hario Village, the base's official family housing area, is roughly 25 minutes away with its own on-site K-12 DoD school and a base shuttle bus.
