The Post
Fort Buchanan is the only active-duty Army installation in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, and it earns its nickname — "Sentinel of the Caribbean" — from its job: fast, cost-effective support to missions across the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The 746-acre post straddles the Guaynabo and Bayamón municipal lines in the San Juan metro area, and headquarters the 1st Mission Support Command, the U.S. Army Reserve's Caribbean-facing command.
This isn't a single-service combat garrison — it's a true joint tenant hub. Along with Army Reserve units like the 393rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, the post hosts the Puerto Rico Army National Guard, a Marine Corps Reserve detachment of the 4th Marine Logistics Group, and a Navy Operations Support Center. All told, the installation serves roughly 130,000 people — active personnel, dependents, retirees, veterans, and the civilian workforce — across the island.
The post dates back to 1923 as Camp Buchanan and was renamed Fort Buchanan in 1940, named for an early commander of the Puerto Rico Regiment.
