Homeland's Missile Shield

Fort Greely isn't a garrison — it's a homeland-defense site. Deep in Alaska's interior, roughly 100 miles southeast of Fairbanks, it hosts the Ground-based Midcourse Defense interceptor field that stands between an ICBM launch and the rest of the country. It's small, remote, and mission-focused. This page is the honest version of what to expect, not a padded one.

The Post

A Small Post With a National Mission

Fort Greely exists for one reason: to field Ground-based Interceptors against a long-range ballistic missile attack on the U.S. homeland. Forty of the system's 44 interceptors are stationed here (the other four sit at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California), and in 2025 Boeing finished construction on 20 additional silos as the site continues to grow. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion runs the mission on the ground, reporting to the 100th Missile Defense Brigade headquartered in Colorado Springs; the 59th Signal Battalion keeps the network element running.

Fort Greely also hosts the Army's Cold Regions Test Center, which puts equipment through real extreme-cold and cold-weather testing — the same brutal winters that shape everything else about living here aren't a side effect, they're the point of part of the mission.

Be honest with yourself about scale before you arrive: this started as Big Delta Army Airfield in 1942 supporting Lend-Lease flights to the Soviet Union, and it's still one of the smallest, most remote posts in the Army — a missile field and a tiny town, not a large troop garrison. If you're used to a post the size of Bragg or Hood, recalibrate.

One Town, One Real Answer

There isn't a menu of suburbs here. This is the honest version: one real town, and one city you'll drive to for everything else.

Delta Junction

The town, full stop. About 918 people as of the 2020 census, sitting right where the Alaska Highway ends at the Richardson Highway. Frontier character — military, tourism, mining, and agriculture — with the Delta-Greely School District (its elementary school has earned National Blue Ribbon recognition) and a local clinic for primary care. On-post housing at Greely and off-post housing in town are effectively your two options; rental inventory in a town this size is thin, so plan for it.

Commute: Minutes to on-post — this is the whole commute

Fairbanks (for supply runs, not living)

Roughly 100 miles north via the Richardson Highway — where you'll go for full grocery shopping, big-box stores, specialty medical care, and the region's commercial airport. Almost nobody lives in Fairbanks and commutes to Fort Greely daily; treat it as the trip you plan for, not a neighborhood option.
