The Veteran Alliance

Fort Hood -- yes, that's the name again, not Fort Cavazos, at least for right now -- runs III Armored Corps and the 1st Cavalry Division, and it's the largest employer in Texas. About seven in ten families here live off-post in Killeen, Harker Heights, or Copperas Cove rather than waiting on Cavalry Family Housing, so don't assume on-post is even the default path. The short version on where to live: if Killeen ISD's C rating and the F-rated middle schools that turned up in the district's 2025 accountability results worry you, Belton or Salado get you meaningfully better-rated schools for a longer commute and a real price jump, while Harker Heights splits the difference. The number one thing to know: this is a strong VA-loan buy market with no Texas state income tax, so run the numbers on buying before assuming renting is the only option on a PCS timeline. The number one thing to avoid: don't wire a deposit on an off-post rental you haven't personally walked through -- cross-check the listing against Bell County Appraisal District records first, PCS season here draws the same scams every base draws.

Where the Army Parks Its Armor

Fort Hood (Fort Cavazos, 2023–2025) is one of the Army's largest armor and mechanized installations — III Armored Corps, the 1st Cavalry Division, and enough Central Texas to maneuver all of it. New orders? Here's the ground truth.

The Post

Tanks Need Room — Texas Has It

Fort Hood exists because armored formations need space, and Central Texas supplied it. III Armored Corps runs the post; the 1st Cavalry Division — the First Team — is its signature formation. The whole place is scaled to heavy metal: motor pools that go to the horizon, gunnery ranges, and maneuver land measured in ranching units, not city blocks.

Off post, Killeen is a city that exists largely because the post does — a big, affordable rental market, hot dry summers, and neighbors who have all done a gunnery density themselves. The US-190/I-14 corridor strings the whole metro together, from Copperas Cove in the west to Belton and Temple in the east, so your housing choice is really a choice of exit number.

About the name: renamed Fort Cavazos in 2023 for Gen. Richard Cavazos, the Army's first Hispanic four-star, then redesignated Fort Hood in 2025. Paperwork from those two years may say either — same gate, same post.

Where You'll Actually Live

Pick Your Zip Code

Six real choices along one highway corridor. Everything keys off US-190/I-14 — pick your exit, pick your life.

Killeen

The post's company town — sprawling, unpretentious, and built for soldiers. The biggest rental inventory in Central Texas by a mile, everything from starter apartments to whole subdivisions where every driveway has a truck with a unit sticker.

Commute: 10–20 min to most gates, worse at shift change

Harker Heights

Where families upgrade once they know the area: newer builds, the region's main shopping corridor, and the schools people specifically move for. The default answer when someone asks 'where should we actually buy?'

Commute: 15–25 min via US-190/I-14

Copperas Cove

The quieter west-side option — small-town pace, established neighborhoods, and prices that stretch a BAH further. Backs right up to the west end of post.

Commute: 15–25 min to the west gates

Nolanville

Small and easy to miss between Killeen and Belton, which is exactly its appeal — newer subdivisions, less traffic, and a straight shot down 190 either direction.

Commute: 15–25 min along US-190/I-14

Belton

Courthouse-square Texas with a lake. You trade a longer drive for an actual historic downtown, Belton Lake weekends, and distance from the strip-mall corridor.

Commute: 25–35 min via I-14

Temple

The far-east play: a real mid-size city with its own hospital system and I-35 access for anything Austin-direction. Popular with dual-income families where one job isn't on post.

Commute: 35–45 min — the longest ride on this list

The Playbook

Your First 30 Days

01
Pick your exit before your house

Everything here lives on the US-190/I-14 corridor. Decide Killeen-close vs. Belton/Temple-far first — a VA loan preapproval costs nothing and makes the choice real.

02
In-process + DEERS same week

Knock out in-processing, DEERS updates, and TRICARE transfer in week one — CDC waitlists and referrals all key off it, and this post's waitlists are not short.

03
Sort school districts early

Killeen ISD, Copperas Cove ISD, Belton ISD, and Temple ISD each run their own enrollment timelines — register the moment you have an address, not after the moving truck.

04
Beat the Texas summer

If you arrive May–September, get the AC serviced and the utilities transferred before move-in day. Central Texas heat does not negotiate, and neither do July electric bills.

Roll Into Hood With Keys in Hand

Zero-down VA loans for eligible buyers, all 50 states from day one, and Personal Bankers who know the Killeen–Temple corridor. Start before you out-process.

Subject to credit approval and VA eligibility. The Veteran Alliance is a fintech company, not a bank; banking services provided through partner institutions.

Where to Actually Live

On-Post Housing

Cavalry Family Housing, run by Lendlease, is Fort Hood's privatized family housing -- roughly 5,500 homes. Heritage Heights is the newest neighborhood and the one built for junior enlisted families; a $420M modernization program is underway across the rest of the inventory as of this research pass, so ask specifically which villages have already been touched by that money and which haven't before assuming a newer unit. As with any privatized-housing PCS, tour the specific unit in person and don't take a leasing office's description of "recently renovated" at face value.

Off-Post Neighborhoods

Real trade-offs, sourced from families who actually live around Fort Hood — not a real-estate brochure.

Harker Heights

The preferred suburb for a lot of Fort Hood families -- newer housing stock than Killeen, including the Skipcha Mountain Estates and Knights Ridge subdivisions, at a real price premium over Killeen proper.

Commute
Short, direct commute to post via the FM 2410/Clear Creek Gate area -- confirm current drive time for the specific address.
Rent
No exact figure in this research pass -- confirm current listings.
Buy
Median around $325K per this research pass -- confirm current listings before an offer.
HOA
Varies by subdivision -- confirm before signing.
Best For
Families who want newer construction and are willing to pay Harker Heights' premium-suburb price.
Known Issues
Price premium over Killeen is the main trade-off.

Killeen

The closest, cheapest option and the city the post itself grew out of -- Yowell Ranch and Heritage Oaks are named starter-home areas, with homes available under $250K per this research pass. The trade-off is a higher crime rate than the surrounding suburbs and Killeen ISD's C district rating, though individual campus quality varies a lot -- see schools_intro.

Commute
Shortest commute of the off-post options -- confirm current drive time for the specific address and gate.
Rent
No exact figure in this research pass -- confirm current listings.
Buy
Under $250K per this research pass -- confirm current listings before an offer.
HOA
Varies by subdivision -- confirm before signing.
Best For
Budget-first families willing to research the specific neighborhood and zoned school closely.
Known Issues
Higher crime rate than Harker Heights/Belton/Salado, and Killeen ISD carries a C district rating with some F-rated middle school campuses in the 2025 results -- verify the specific zoned school, not just the district letter grade.

Copperas Cove

Its own school district (Copperas Cove ISD, separate from Killeen ISD), a quieter pace than Killeen, and prices around $296K per this research pass.

Commute
West side of post -- confirm current drive time for the specific address and gate.
Rent

Buy
~$296K per this research pass -- confirm current listings before an offer.
HOA
Varies by subdivision -- confirm before signing.
Best For
Families who want a quieter pace and are fine with Copperas Cove ISD instead of Killeen or Belton.
Known Issues
Own school district means its own enrollment process -- don't assume Killeen ISD rules apply.

Belton

Belton ISD outranks Killeen ISD by reputation and by the numbers, at a real price step-up from Killeen and Harker Heights -- historic downtown Belton (already covered in this base's existing Local Favorites) adds some actual character beyond just subdivisions.

Commute
Longer commute than Harker Heights or Killeen -- confirm current drive time for the specific address.
Rent

Buy
~$380K per this research pass -- confirm current listings before an offer.
HOA

Best For
Families prioritizing Belton ISD's school ratings over commute time and price.
Known Issues
Commute and price are the trade-offs for the better-rated schools.

Nolanville

A middle-ground option between Killeen and Belton on both price and commute -- worth a look if neither end of that spectrum quite fits.

Best For

Known Issues
Less name recognition than its neighbors means less to go on without doing your own legwork -- confirm current inventory and school zoning directly.

Temple

About a 29-minute drive from post -- the pick if a spouse or family member works at the Baylor Scott & White Health system's Temple hospital campus, one of the area's largest civilian employers.

Best For
Dual-income families where the non-military job is in Temple, particularly at Baylor Scott & White.
Known Issues
Longest realistic daily commute on this list for someone working on post full-time.

Gatesville

Affordable and rural, at the cost of the longest commute of the group -- the pick if space and price matter more than a short drive to post.

Buy

HOA
Varies by property -- confirm before signing.
Best For
Families who want rural space and lower prices and can absorb the drive.
Known Issues
Commute length is the entire trade-off.

Salado

The splurge option -- Salado ISD is the area's top-rated district, in an upscale, small-town setting with genuine character (Salado Creek, the historic district, a real local dining scene like The Village Cafe & Salado Sourdough).

Commute
Confirm current drive time to post -- north of Belton, a real commute for post-based work.
Rent
No exact figure in this research pass -- confirm current listings.
Buy
$400s+ per this research pass -- confirm current listings before an offer.
HOA
Varies by subdivision -- confirm before signing.
Best For
Families who want Salado ISD and an upscale small-town setting and can absorb both the price and the commute.
Known Issues
Price and commute are both real trade-offs for the area's best-rated schools and small-town feel.
Don't Get Scammed

The standard PCS-season scam shows up here too: a listing priced a little too well, a landlord who's always "traveling" and won't show the unit in person, pressure to wire a deposit before you've set foot inside. Cross-check any off-post listing against the Bell County Appraisal District's public records before sending anyone money, and never wire funds for a property you or someone you personally trust in Central Texas hasn't walked through. On the buy side, this is a genuinely strong VA-loan market -- Salado runs upscale ($400s+ per this research pass, confirm current listings), Belton sits around $380K, Harker Heights around $325K, and Killeen is the cheapest entry point at under $250K if you're willing to trade school ratings and a higher crime rate for the price.

Quick Question

Where are you at with housing near Fort Hood?

Childcare

Register Today, Not When You Land

Fort Hood's Child, Youth & School Services runs NAEYC-accredited CDCs, and Darnall CDC (attached to the medical center) operates 24/7 -- register at MilitaryChildCare.com the day your orders drop, this base runs the same tight-capacity math every installation does. This research pass only independently confirmed the Darnall CDC by name; Fort Hood runs additional CYS centers elsewhere on post that weren't individually verified by name or address this session -- ask CYS directly which centers currently have openings rather than assuming Darnall is the only option. Off-post, four named options turned up in this pass: Kim's Play & Learn Academy in Harker Heights (a licensed home-based preschool, capped at 12 kids, run by a childcare provider with 20-plus years of experience including as a licensed home child care provider through the military), Little Shadows Child Development Center (licensed centers in both Killeen and Harker Heights), Armed Services YMCA Killeen (childcare and after-school programming, with a Clifton Park Elementary-based location alongside its main Harker Heights facility), and Peaceable Kingdom Retreat -- not daycare in the traditional sense, but a well-established Killeen-area retreat and camp specifically for kids with chronic illness or special needs, run by Variety of Texas. Four named off-post options is below where this base guide should land -- needs a dedicated follow-up pass rather than padding the list further; see verify_flags.

Veteran-Owned
Black Rifle Coffee Company (Killeen)

Veteran-Owned Around Fort Hood

Restaurant

Band of Brothers BBQ

VETERAN-OWNED. Owner James Crawford opened a food truck in 2019 after 20 years perfecting his barbecue and a decade of catering parties before that; the brick-and-mortar at 13178 S Fort Hood St followed a few months later. Known for chicken, ribs, brisket, and sausage -- and openly candid about the squeeze rising brisket prices (from about $2/lb in 2019 to nearly $8/lb now) have put on keeping a plate affordable.

KWTX news coverage (Feb 2026, confirmed live via WebSearch Aug 30 2026) directly identifies Band of Brothers BBQ as a 'veteran owned BBQ spot' and covers owner James Crawford by name.
Rossler's Blue Cord Barbecue

VETERAN-OWNED. Co-owner and pitmaster Steven Rossler spent 20.5 years as an Army infantryman, retiring in December 2020 with a Bronze Star with Valor from Afghanistan, before opening this Harker Heights barbecue trailer in early 2016. Texas Monthly named it one of the state's Top 50 BBQ joints; it operates out of a food trailer open two days a week plus catering and festival dates.

Off the Record

Stuff Nobody Tells You

US-190/I-14 is the spine everyone ends up on, and PT hour plus the 4-6pm shift change are when gate traffic actually backs up -- budget extra time your first few weeks. Expect hot, humid Central Texas summers and mild winters with the occasional ice storm that shuts the whole area down for a day. Major civilian employers: Killeen ISD, Baylor Scott & White's Temple hospital system (about a 29-minute drive), First National Bank Texas (headquartered in Killeen), and a large Teleperformance call-center operation -- worth knowing if a spouse is job-hunting outside the gates. Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center draws real complaints in the research pass (roughly a 2.0 rating on Yelp was cited, ER waits called out specifically) with Orthopedics singled out as a bright spot -- treat the exact rating as unverified since it wasn't independently re-pulled this session, but the general pattern (slow ER, mixed specialty care) matches what shows up at most Army MTFs, so budget for it rather than being surprised. Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA) is Fort Hood MWR's 2,000-plus-acre lake recreation area -- zipline, paintball, mountain bike trails, $3/car for DoD ID holders -- but access now requires a DoD ID or a same-day visitor pass with a background check processed through the Marvin Leath Visitor Welcome Center, not a walk-up. If you want an actual weekend trip: Austin is about an hour away, Waco/Magnolia Market about an hour, San Antonio roughly two and a half.

Quick Answers

The questions people PCSing to Fort Hood actually ask.

Fort Hood, as of this writing -- it was renamed Fort Cavazos in May 2023, then reverted back to Fort Hood in July 2025, now honoring WWI Col. Robert B. Hood rather than the Confederate general the original name referred to. A bill to rename it back to Fort Cavazos passed a House committee on a narrow vote in June 2026 but still needs the full House, the Senate, and the President -- so check current status before assuming either name is final.

It comes down to schools versus commute and price. Harker Heights is the popular middle-ground pick with newer housing. Killeen is closest and cheapest but carries Killeen ISD's C rating (with real campus-level variation -- verify the specific zoned school). Belton and Salado get you meaningfully better-rated schools for a longer commute and a real price step-up.

Cavalry Family Housing (run by Lendlease) covers roughly 5,500 homes, with Heritage Heights the newest section for junior enlisted families and a $420M modernization program underway elsewhere in the portfolio. Reverify the current wait directly with Cavalry Family Housing/Lendlease, and tour your specific assigned unit in person before signing.

Mixed, and it depends heavily on the specific campus. Killeen ISD carries a C overall rating; Harker Heights High moved from a C to a B in 2025 and Richard E. Cavazos Elementary earned an A both years, but several central-Killeen middle schools got F ratings in the 2025 results. Verify the zoned school for your specific address rather than judging by the district letter grade alone.

Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area is Fort Hood MWR's 2,000-plus-acre lake recreation spot -- zipline, paintball, mountain bike trails, $3/car for DoD ID holders. Access now requires a DoD ID or a same-day visitor pass with a background check, processed through the Marvin Leath Visitor Welcome Center -- it's not a walk-up gate anymore.

PT hour in the morning and the 4-6pm shift change on US-190/I-14, the main spine everyone ends up using. Budget extra time your first few weeks until you learn which gate and which lane actually moves fastest for your commute.

This page's deep-content sections come from VAB Base Guides research pipeline: "Fort Hood + Fort Bliss - Raw Research (FULL)" (Google Drive) + independent WebSearch verification pass, Aug 30 2026 (official business/organization sites as primary; Yelp/Tripadvisor as tier-2/3 fallback per the handoff doc's link-priority order where no official site could be confirmed). This session's WebSearch budget (200/200) was exhausted partway through the Fort Bliss half of this pass -- see verify_flags for exactly what that leaves unconfirmed on this base. , last checked August 30, 2026.

A few things worth double-checking before you make a call:

  • Naming is politically live again: Fort Hood was Fort Hood -> renamed Fort Cavazos (May 2023, honoring Gen. Richard Cavazos) -> reverted to Fort Hood (July 28, 2025, now honoring WWI Col. Robert B. Hood, not the Confederate general the original name referred to). WebSearch verification (Aug 30 2026: KDH News, KWTX, KBTX, TPR, KUT, Army.mil) confirms Fort Hood is the CURRENT official name -- but a bill to rename it back to Fort Cavazos passed the House Armed Services Committee on a narrow 29-27 vote in June 2026, and still needs the full House, the Senate, and the President before taking effect. Reverify current status before publish; this has already flipped once and could flip again.
  • Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center's ~2.0 Yelp rating is carried from the raw research doc and was NOT independently re-pulled this session -- reverify the current rating and specific complaint themes before publish.
  • Only Darnall CDC was independently confirmed by name among Fort Hood's on-post CYS Child Development Centers this session -- Fort Hood runs additional CYS centers elsewhere on post that were not individually named/addressed this session; needs a follow-up pass.
  • Off-post childcare coverage (4 named centers: Kim's Play & Learn Academy, Little Shadows Child Development Center, Armed Services YMCA Killeen, Peaceable Kingdom Retreat) is below the template's 8-10+ target -- these 4 are independently verified as currently open and correctly named/addressed, not padded with invented names, but the list needs a dedicated follow-up research pass to reach a fuller count.
  • Restaurant coverage (14 new rows + 1 existing veteran-owned brewery from migration 4172 = 15) is below the template's 20-25 target. This session's WebSearch budget ran out during the Fort Bliss half of this pass before additional Fort Hood-area restaurants could be searched; needs a follow-up pass.
  • Miller's Smokehouse, Cajun Crabs & Shrimp Bar & Grill, Opa's Schnitzel Hut, and Arepitas had no independently confirmable OFFICIAL website domain in this session's search results (only aggregator/menu-mirror sites and social media) -- inserted below with a Yelp/Tripadvisor fallback link per the handoff doc's priority order rather than a guessed domain; see each row's inline flag.
  • 2026 BAH figures for Fort Hood/Killeen were not sourced in the raw research doc and were not independently pulled from the current DFAS BAH calculator this session -- add and verify before publish.
  • Gate hours/operating status for Fort Hood's gates (Main Gate/T.J. Mills Blvd and Clear Creek Gate, both cited as 24/7 in the raw research doc; others restricted-hours) were not independently reverified with Fort Hood PAO this session.
