The Base
The Ogden Air Logistics Complex — part of Air Force Materiel Command — is the worldwide depot manager for F-35A, F-16, and A-10 sustainment, along with Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile maintenance. That mission alone makes Hill one of the largest industrial employers in Utah, running around the clock whether or not a single jet takes off that day.
Layered on top of the depot is an active flightline: the 388th Fighter Wing (Air Combat Command) and the 419th Fighter Wing (Air Force Reserve) fly F-35As together under total force integration, sharing aircraft, facilities, and people. The 75th Air Base Wing hosts the whole installation — depot, fighter wings, and more than 50 additional mission-partner units — supporting roughly 27,000 active duty, civilian, and contractor personnel and their families. Hill also runs the 1.1-million-acre Utah Test and Training Range, and by population and geographic footprint it's the Air Force's second-largest base.
It opened as Hill Field on November 7, 1940, named for Maj. Ployer Peter Hill, an Army Air Corps test pilot killed in the 1935 crash of the Boeing Model 299 prototype — the aircraft that became the B-17. It became Hill Air Force Base in 1948 with the Air Force's founding, and it's sat on the same ground in Davis County ever since, wedged between the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake.
