Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is U.S. Pacific Fleet's headquarters and homeport, sharing a fence line with Hickam's airlift and fighter wings — on the most historic ground in the American military. It's also the PCS where the logistics are half the battle. This is the honest version.
The Base
The Pacific Fleet's Front Porch
This is a Navy-led joint base where two legendary installations share one fence: Pearl Harbor, homeporting Pacific Fleet submarines and surface ships under the fleet's own headquarters, and Hickam, where the 15th Wing's airlifters and the Hawaii Air National Guard's fighters work the same runways as Honolulu's airport. You will pass the USS Arizona Memorial on your way to work. That never fully becomes routine, and it shouldn't.
Now the fine print. Oahu housing is scarce and expensive — the allowances are sized for it, but they only work if you spend them carefully, and many families wait on privatized-housing lists.
