Kadena is home to the 18th Wing — the Air Force's largest and most diverse combat wing — flying fighters, tankers, rescue, and airborne control off the same two runways in the middle of Okinawa. If orders just sent you here, this page is the honest version of your first 30 days OCONUS.
The Post
The 18th Wing runs Kadena across five groups — operations, maintenance, mission support, civil engineer, and medical. The flight line covers a lot of ground: the 44th and 67th Fighter Squadrons, the 909th Air Refueling Squadron flying KC-135 tankers, the 961st Airborne Air Control Squadron, the 623rd Air Control Squadron, and the 31st and 33rd Rescue Squadrons. Two parallel runways, each just over two miles long, have kept this the busiest flight line in the Air Force since 1945.
Kadena isn't just the 18th Wing. The 353rd Special Operations Wing — Air Force Special Operations Command's only Pacific aviation wing — flies from here too, and the Army's 1st Battalion, 1st Air Defense Artillery Regiment runs Patriot PAC-3 batteries on the installation as part of the region's missile-defense picture. Add the 733rd Air Mobility Squadron moving cargo and people through the Pacific, and this one base carries an outsized share of what the U.S. does in the region.
The flight line is mid-transition right now: the Air Force is replacing Kadena's aging F-15C/D fleet with 36 permanently stationed F-15EX Eagle IIs, with the first training jet arriving in June 2026 ahead of full stationing expected in 2027. Until then, rotational F-22, F-35A, F-15E, and F-16 squadrons keep the flight line covered — so don't be surprised by whichever jet is on the ramp the week you land.

The Playbook
No-fee passports for the whole family and your Status of Forces Agreement paperwork come first. On Okinawa, SOFA status is the key that unlocks housing, a driver's license, and a car — nothing else moves without it.
Rabies vaccination has to land 30 days to 12 months before travel; register with Okinawa VETAC and get to a walk-in visit within 72 hours of arrival. Get the paperwork exactly right and quarantine can be hours, not weeks. Certain breeds — pit bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Chows, wolf hybrids — can't come to Okinawa at all.
