Where America Builds Its Space Force

Los Angeles Space Force Base (Los Angeles AFB until 2021) is a roughly 100-acre installation tucked into El Segundo's aerospace corridor, two miles south of LAX — headquarters to Space Systems Command and the only active-duty military installation in Los Angeles County. It's also one of the most expensive PCS markets in the entire Department of Defense. This page is your first 30 days, sorted honestly.

The Post

A Small Footprint, a Massive Mission

Don't expect a traditional Air Force base. LASFB has no runway, no flightline, and barely 100 acres inside the fence — it functions less like a garrison and more like a secured headquarters campus embedded in a working aerospace city. What it lacks in size it makes up for in mission: it's home to Space Systems Command (SSC), the Space Force field command stood up on August 13, 2021 (from the old Space and Missile Systems Center) to research, develop, acquire, and sustain the nation's military space systems — GPS, missile-warning satellites, military communications, launch services, and space-domain-awareness ground networks — on a budget north of $15 billion a year. Space Base Delta 3 runs the installation itself, with the 61st Medical, Civil Engineer, Communications, Force Support, and Security Forces squadrons keeping roughly 6,000-plus military, civilian, and contractor personnel connected to SSC moving.

That workforce genuinely outgrows the fence line — this is one of the few Space Force installations where a large share of the mission happens in office buildings scattered around El Segundo rather than behind the main gate itself, because the base's footprint was never built to hold a headquarters this size. You'll badge into more than one building over a career here, and that's normal. The Aerospace Corporation, the federally funded think tank that's supported SMC/SSC's engineering work for decades, sits right next door — and El Segundo/South Bay more broadly is one of the densest aerospace-and-defense corridors in the country, a few miles from SpaceX's Hawthorne headquarters and a long list of primes and subcontractors.

One more thing that trips up new arrivals: there is no family housing on the installation. LASFB's residential community lives about 20 miles south at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, privatized under Tierra Vista Communities — plan your PCS around that distance, not around the El Segundo gate.

Where You'll Actually Live

Pick Your Zip Code

Six real choices, honest trade-offs — and a market that's genuinely one of the most expensive in the country. South Bay LA traffic is real; commutes below assume normal conditions, not a straight-line map guess.

El Segundo

Literally where the base sits — a walkable, small-town grid nicknamed 'Mayberry by the Sea' that's also ground zero for the LA aerospace industry. Shortest possible commute, but rock-bottom inventory and a median sale price north of $1.5M keep it out of reach for most first-term families.

Commute: 0–10 min — you could walk to the Douglas Street gate from parts of town

Manhattan Beach

The priciest address on this list by a wide margin — beach-glam architecture, top-rated schools, and a median sale price well north of $2.8M. Almost nobody PCSing here buys in; this is context for what 'expensive' means locally, not a realistic default.

Commute: 10–15 min up Sepulveda/PCH outside rush hour

Hermosa Beach

A smaller, denser beach town next door to Manhattan Beach — tight lots, a lively downtown strip, and a median sale price around $1.8M. Still a beach-city premium, just a notch below its northern neighbor.

Commute: 10–15 min via Aviation/PCH

Redondo Beach

The most livable of the beach cities for a military budget — a working marina, more condo and apartment inventory than Manhattan or Hermosa, and prices that dip toward the $1.5M range rather than well past it. Still genuinely expensive; just less so.

Commute: 10–20 min via PCH/Artesia, worse at evening rush

Torrance

The inland value play — a larger, more diverse city with real square footage for the money, a broader rental market, and strong public schools. The community most South Bay PCS guides point families toward first when the beach cities don't pencil out.

Commute: 15–25 min via I-405/Hawthorne Blvd

San Pedro (Fort MacArthur)

Not a neighborhood pick so much as a fact you need to know: LASFB has no family housing of its own. The actual on-post military housing is here, at Fort MacArthur, run by Tierra Vista Communities — a real option if you want base housing at all, at the cost of a real commute.

Commute: 20–30 min north on I-110/I-405 to the LASFB gates

The Playbook

Your First 30 Days

01
Start the housing search before you land

This is one of the tightest, priciest rental and sales markets in the DoD — inventory near El Segundo moves in days, not weeks. Get a VA loan preapproval now; it costs nothing and makes any offer you write competitive.

02
Decide El Segundo vs. the commute early

There's no on-installation family housing, and the closer you live, the more you pay. Fort MacArthur in San Pedro is a real base-housing option — just a real commute too. Pick that trade-off deliberately, not by default.

03
In-process + DEERS same week

Knock out in-processing, DEERS updates, and TRICARE region transfer through the 61st Medical Squadron in week one — CDC waitlists and referrals key off it, and CDC space here fills fast.

04
Register kids for school the moment you have an address

There's no DoDEA school on base — you'll enroll in whichever local district covers your address (El Segundo, LAUSD, or another South Bay district). Enrollment windows move faster than PCS timelines; don't wait until you arrive.
