The Base
Luke Air Force Base sits just west of Glendale and about fifteen miles from downtown Phoenix — and most of the base itself is actually inside Glendale's city limits. It's home to the 56th Fighter Wing, an Air Education and Training Command unit that has held the title of the Air Force's largest fighter wing since 1989. For nearly five decades that meant F-16s; the Air Force flew its last U.S. F-16 pilot-training mission here on September 30, 2024, and the wing has been converting to an all-F-35A training mission for American pilots ever since.
As of 2026, seven F-35A squadrons run the formal training course, and Luke is on track to house the largest F-35 simulator operation anywhere — 32 full-mission simulators feeding a nine-month basic course that's roughly half sim time. One F-16 squadron, the 425th Fighter Squadron "Black Widows," keeps flying — it trains Republic of Singapore Air Force pilots exclusively. Alongside the U.S. Air Force, pilots from Australia, Norway, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium train here on the F-35, making Luke's flight line one of the most genuinely international in the entire Air Force. The Air Force Reserve's 944th Fighter Wing flies from the same runways as a Total Force partner.
The base carries the name of 2d Lt. Frank Luke Jr., a Phoenix-born WWI aviator and the first American airman awarded the Medal of Honor — a hometown name for a base that trains the world. Practically, that history means a community built for a training tempo, not a garrison tempo: constant flight ops, a steady rotation of incoming and outgoing families, and a West Valley economy that's grown up around the base for over 80 years.
