The Station

MCAS Iwakuni is a genuinely joint flightline. Marine Aircraft Group 12 flies F-35B Lightning II squadrons, an aerial-refueling squadron, and support squadrons under the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing — running anti-air warfare and offensive air-support training for the Fleet Marine Force. Sharing the same runway is Carrier Air Wing Five, the Navy's only forward-deployed carrier air wing, whose fixed-wing squadrons relocated here from Naval Air Facility Atsugi.
That mix means a community used to both services' rhythms — Marine deployment cycles alongside Navy carrier workups — and a base population that has genuinely seen an overseas PCS before.
Iwakuni sits in the Nishiki river delta of Yamaguchi Prefecture, with Hiroshima roughly 25 miles northeast — close enough for an off-duty day trip, not a realistic daily commute. Most families build their routine around Iwakuni city itself.
