The Post
The 35th Fighter Wing hosts Misawa, flying roughly 48 F-16 "Wild Weasel" fighters out of the 13th Fighter Squadron ("Panthers") and 14th Fighter Squadron ("Samurais"). It's genuinely joint and bilateral: Naval Air Facility Misawa shares the installation, hosting rotational P-8A Poseidon and EA-18G Growler squadrons from Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 1 and Navy Information Operations Command Misawa, while the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's Northern Air Defense Force headquarters and 3rd Air Wing — flying F-35s through the 301st and 302nd Tactical Fighter Squadrons — operate off the same runway. Add in Air Force Office of Special Investigations Det 623, a Space Force detachment, and the fact that Misawa's civilian airport shares the same strip, and you've got the only base in the Pacific where all of that is true at once.
Geographically, this is northern Honshu, not Tokyo: Misawa sits on the shores of Lake Ogawara in Aomori Prefecture, roughly 684 km north of the capital. Winters are real — average annual snowfall runs close to 300 cm, and January/February snow doesn't fully melt between storms. Hachinohe, the nearest larger city, is a 30–40 minute drive away; the surrounding economy runs on agriculture and commercial fishing more than anything you'd recognize from a Tokyo-area assignment.
Practically, that adds up to a quieter, smaller-town posting than most Japan assignments, with a close-knit on-base community that comes from being genuinely more remote — plus the paperwork (SOFA status, command sponsorship) and logistics (mandatory housing assignment process, winter gear) that come with any OCONUS PCS.
