The Base
Training Air Wing ONE runs the show here under two squadrons today — VT-7 "Eagles" and VT-9 "Tigers," both flying the T-45C Goshawk (a third squadron, VT-19, flew out of Meridian from 1971 until it was folded into VT-9 in 1998). Between them, TW-1 produces roughly half of the Navy's carrier-qualified tailhook pilots — the other half comes out of NAS Kingsville, Texas, the only other full jet-strike training base in the country.
Almost nobody arrives here straight out of commissioning. Student naval aviators complete primary flight training in the T-6B Texan II at NAS Whiting Field or NAS Corpus Christi first, then PCS to Meridian for a roughly twelve-month, 130-plus-flight syllabus that ends in carrier qualifications. For a lot of junior officers, this is PCS number two before they've even hit their first fleet squadron — plan your household goods and housing search accordingly.
The base itself runs over 8,000 acres on McCain Field — named for Admiral John S. McCain Sr., a Mississippi native — plus another 4,000 acres at the Joe Williams outlying landing field northwest of town. Add in the Naval Technical Training Center and Marine Aviation Training Support Squadron ONE, and the installation supports more than 4,000 military, civilians, and dependents in a part of east-central Mississippi where NAS Meridian is one of the region's largest employers.
