Naval Base Kitsap merged the Bremerton shipyard and the Bangor submarine base into one command in 2004 — but they're still two very different postings on opposite ends of the Kitsap Peninsula. Which gate you report to changes almost everything below.
The Base
Bremerton is home to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility — one of the Navy's four naval nuclear shipyards, and the only West Coast dry dock able to take a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. It's drydock-and-overhaul work: surface ships in for maintenance, and decommissioned warships kept in reserve.
Bangor, roughly across the peninsula, is one of only two U.S. Navy Trident submarine bases in the country — homeport for the Pacific Fleet's ballistic-missile submarines under Submarine Group 9, with the Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific alongside it. Different mission, different tempo, different day-to-day life for the families there.
The base also carries smaller installations at Indian Island, Manchester, and Keyport under the same Navy Region Northwest umbrella. For most incoming families, though, the first real decision is which of the two main gates — Bremerton or Bangor — you're actually reporting to, because it determines which town on this list makes sense.
