The Post
NPS started in 1909 as a school of marine engineering at Annapolis and became a fully accredited, degree-granting graduate institution after World War II. A postwar review team screened 25 sites nationwide before recommending the old Hotel Del Monte in Monterey — the Navy bought the hotel and 627 surrounding acres for $2.13 million, and the school moved in December 1951. Herrmann Hall, the school's main academic building, is the old hotel itself.
Today NPS grants master's and doctoral degrees across more than 70 fields of study spanning 13 academic departments — everything from electrical engineering and cybersecurity to national security affairs — to roughly 2,586 students. Most are active-duty officers from every U.S. service branch, alongside DoD civilians and officers from around 50 partner nations who come through the International Graduate Programs Office; a 2006 renovation of two Herrmann Hall wings added 140 rooms built specifically for international officers and their families.
NPS isn't the only military school in town — the Defense Language Institute runs separately at the Presidio of Monterey, a different installation entirely. Naval Support Activity Monterey is the host command that actually runs the base infrastructure NPS sits on, overseeing more than a dozen tenant commands including NPS itself. The tour here is genuinely different from a line-unit PCS: an accompanied assignment built around a graduate program, typically running somewhere in the 18-to-24-month range depending on the curriculum.
