The Base
NSA Naples hosts the headquarters for U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa (NAVEUR-NAVAF) and U.S. Sixth Fleet — and the same commanding admiral wears a second hat as NATO's Commander, Allied Joint Force Command Naples, which plans and conducts alliance operations across the Mediterranean and beyond. Sixth Fleet's flagship, USS Mount Whitney, is homeported down the coast at NSA Gaeta, a detachment of NSA Naples since 2006.
The installation itself is really two installations. Capodichino, next to Naples International Airport, is the administrative and headquarters site. The Support Site in Gricignano di Aversa, about 14 miles north, is where most families actually live their day-to-day — the Navy Exchange, commissary, Naval Hospital Naples, DoDEA schools, and Carney Park all sit there. Plan your first stop around which site your orders actually send you to; they don't function as one walkable base.
The reason people fight for these orders: this is the Bay of Naples, with Vesuvius on the skyline and the Amalfi Coast a drive away. It's also a real Italian city, not a built-for-Americans garrison town — the tour rewards people who lean into that instead of trying to recreate home.
