The Installation
Don't expect the deployable-brigade energy of a big Army post. NSA Panama City's largest tenant, Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD), is a research, development, test, and evaluation command — the Navy's principal source of expertise in mine warfare and mine countermeasures, unmanned maritime systems, and littoral and expeditionary warfare technology. The workforce here skews civilian scientist and engineer as much as it does uniformed.
The other half of the installation's identity is underwater. The Navy Experimental Diving Unit tests the equipment and procedures that every Navy diver eventually relies on, and the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center on the same base is the largest military diving facility in the world — training divers from the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard. A Coast Guard station also operates from the installation.
Practically, that means a quieter operational tempo than a deployable combat post, a genuinely tight-knit community, and a location that's hard to beat: NSA Panama City sits on St. Andrew Bay with direct water access to the Gulf of Mexico, and the main gate — at Thomas Drive and Crag Road — puts you inside Panama City Beach, not on the edge of it.
