The Base

Every family member needs the no-fee government passport for orders, and your status in Germany runs under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement — keep those documents with your orders, not in the household-goods shipment.
On-base or on the economy, the base housing office is the mandatory first stop — they brief the rules, maintain the listings, and keep you out of a bad German lease. German rentals often come without closets or kitchen fixtures; ask before you're surprised.
You can't legally drive here on your stateside license alone — U.S. personnel take the USAREUR-AF driver's test to get certified for German roads. Study the signage; the test has failed plenty of confident drivers.
A PCS to Germany authorizes shipping one privately owned vehicle at government expense — the rest get stored, sold, or driven by family stateside. Decide before the movers show up, and remember your car must pass inspection and register through the military system here.
