Ansbach (city)
The historic margrave capital itself — walkable old town, full shopping and dining, and the biggest off-post community, sitting right outside Bismarck Kaserne's gate.
USAG Ansbach's official motto is "The Best Hometown in Europe" — Apache and Black Hawk crews flying daily over a Bavarian town whose history predates the United States by a millennium. An OCONUS PCS runs on different rules. Here they are.
The Garrison
USAG Ansbach's flagship tenant is the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, headquartered at Katterbach Army Airfield as part of V Corps — Apache attack helicopters, Black Hawk and MEDEVAC Black Hawks, and Chinooks flying daily over Middle Franconia. A second airfield, Storck Barracks in nearby Illesheim, runs as a rotational hub supporting CAB deployments into Eastern Europe.
The garrison also hosts the 7th Engineer Brigade, air defense artillery battalions, 7th Army Training Command, and the U.S. Army Health Clinic Ansbach — a full garrison community built around Bismarck Kaserne, with the motto "The Best Hometown in Europe" meaning more than a slogan to families who've done more than one tour here.
The airfield itself has WWII roots — built by the Luftwaffe in the late 1930s as Fliegerhorst Ansbach and captured by U.S. Third Army in April 1945. The city of Ansbach outside the gate goes back much further: a Benedictine monastery founded around 748 AD that grew into the seat of the Hohenzollern family and, from 1460, the capital of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach — a genuinely historic backdrop for a modern Combat Aviation Brigade.
Where You'll Actually Live
Five real Middle Franconia choices. One rule applies to all of them: the Housing Services Office is your first stop — no lease gets signed without going through them.

The Playbook — OCONUS Edition
An overseas PCS front-loads the paperwork. These four eat the most calendar if you start them late.
Command-sponsored dependents and DoD civilians need a SOFA stamp in a no-fee passport before or shortly after arrival — start the process through the garrison's Passport/SOFA office as soon as orders are in hand.
Uniformed members don't need a tourist passport to enter Germany on orders, but everyone else does — book the appointment early rather than assuming a U.S. consulate visit.
On-post or on the economy, the Housing Services Office (+49-9802-83-3415) is the mandatory first stop before you sign anything in Ansbach's rental market.
Storck Barracks' rotational tempo and the 12th CAB's flight schedule shape traffic and noise patterns across the garrison — build your calendar around it, not against it.
Straight answer: VA loans finance homes in the U.S. and its territories, not foreign property — so nobody here will pretend otherwise. What this tour is actually good for: keeping the home you already own working for you, and lining up the VA loan for wherever your return orders land. Personal Bankers cover all 50 states from day one, even when you're six time zones ahead of them.
Subject to credit approval and VA eligibility. The Veteran Alliance is a fintech company, not a bank; banking services provided through partner institutions.
