The Post
USAG Benelux is headquartered at Chièvres Air Base, roughly 19 kilometers from Casteau — the Belgian village that has hosted SHAPE, NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, since 1967. The garrison's own mission statement is blunt about the job: enable ready USAREUR-AF and NATO forces by managing installation transformation and delivering the services that keep those forces running. It's infrastructure, BASOPS, and logistics — not a fighting formation of its own.
The 424th Air Base Squadron operates Chièvres as a NATO support airfield, and the 309th Airlift Squadron flies executive airlift out of it for NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Tenant units on the Belgium side include the 39th Strategic Signal Battalion and the 405th Army Field Support Brigade. It's an unusual arrangement for an Army garrison: the community you're joining is built around a multinational NATO staff representing dozens of allied nations, not a single U.S. chain of command.
USAG Benelux isn't confined to Belgium, either. The garrison also supports a separate American community built around Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum in the Netherlands — a different NATO headquarters entirely, with its own installation and its own international school. A NATO posting front-loads paperwork most stateside PCS moves never see. Start these four in week one.
Every family member needs the no-fee government passport for orders. Your legal status in Belgium (or the Netherlands, if that's your posting) runs under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement — keep those documents with your orders, not packed in the household-goods shipment.
On-base or on the Belgian economy, the housing office is the mandatory first stop before you sign anything — they brief the rules, maintain the listings, and keep you out of a bad lease in a market you don't know yet.
You need it to drive legally in Belgium: sign up at the Driver's Testing Station (Bldg. 220) on SHAPE, then complete the USA-007 course and USA-007-B exam through Joint Knowledge Online. The SHAPE license is only valid in Belgium — plan for a Belgian national license if you'll drive across borders.
