The Garrison
Torii Station is where the Army keeps its Special Forces on Okinawa. 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) — the Green Berets of the Pacific — runs an unconventional-warfare and foreign-internal-defense mission across a theater that stretches well past this one island. It's a small, tight community by Army standards, and everyone on it understands exactly what that mission asks of a family.
It's also the island's back door. The 10th Support Group runs cargo handling, military fuel distribution, and port operations for practically every U.S. service on Okinawa — Kadena's flightline, the Marine camps up the island's spine, all of it touches logistics that trace back to this garrison. Add the 78th Signal Battalion, 1-1 Air Defense Artillery, 835th Transportation Battalion, and U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, and Torii punches well past a post its size. Officially it became U.S. Army Garrison Okinawa in 2014 — the sign changed, the name everyone actually uses didn't.
The base sits in southwestern Yomitan — Japan's largest village by population, and the quiet, west-coast counterweight to Kadena and the Marine corridor further south. Sugar-cane fields, Yachimun pottery kilns, and Zakimi Castle's UNESCO-listed ruins stand in for American Village's seawall. Roughly a third of Yomitan's land is leased to the U.S. military, Torii included, and hundreds of Japanese farmers still work fields inside the fence line. Same island as Kadena and the Butler camps; a genuinely different Okinawa.

The Playbook — OCONUS Edition
Japan runs its own rules — this is not the same paperwork as a Germany or Italy PCS. These four eat the most calendar if you start them late.
Every family member needs the no-fee government passport for orders. Your status here runs under the bilateral U.S.–Japan Status of Forces Agreement — a separate agreement from NATO's SOFA that covers a Germany or Italy tour, so don't assume the paperwork carries over. Keep it with your orders, not in the household-goods shipment.
Torii's Directorate of Public Works runs housing intake, and on-post space is limited for a garrison this size — most families end up off post through a housing agency in Yomitan, Kadena Town, or Chatan. Check in with the housing office first; they vet which agencies actually work for you before you sign anything.
You'll test for a SOFA driving permit — written and road test — before Okinawa's left-side roads are legally yours, and a stateside license doesn't carry over automatically. Budget real study time; the test fails plenty of confident drivers in the first week.
Plenty of families buy a used car on-island instead of shipping a POV — a small island with its own vehicle-inspection rules makes it the simpler call for a lot of tours. Whatever you drive, learn Okinawa's tropical cyclone condition-of-readiness levels before the first storm names itself; Torii's ALERT system is how you'll hear about it.
