The Garrison
USAG Rheinland-Pfalz runs "Set the Garrison, Set the Theater" as its motto, and it means it literally: this garrison hosts the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, the senior Army logistics headquarters for the entire EUCOM and AFRICOM area of responsibility. 21st TSC has run theater sustainment — opening, distribution, reception, and integration of forces across two continents' worth of operations — from Kleber Kaserne since 1974, under a lineage stretching back to 1965. Its motto is blunt: "First In Support."
The command's reach shows up in where its subordinate brigades actually sit: 7th Engineer Brigade in Ansbach, 16th Sustainment Brigade at Baumholder's Smith and Wetzel Barracks, 18th Military Police Brigade in Grafenwöhr, 30th Medical Brigade in Sembach, and the 405th Army Field Support Brigade and 409th Contracting Support Brigade both headquartered right here in Kaiserslautern. Add the 7th Mission Support Command, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center as fellow tenants, and the garrison's official count runs past 40 tenant organizations — a logistics and sustainment ecosystem, not a single unit.
Unlike Ramstein's flightline west of town, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz's core kasernes — Kleber, Daenner, and Pulaski Barracks — sit inside Kaiserslautern city itself. Miesau Army Depot, the garrison's ammunition and class V storage node, sits about 25 km west near Bruchmühlbach-Miesau. Same host nation, same SOFA rules as any other Germany assignment — but a different mission, a different chain of command, and (mercifully) a shorter walk to work if you land in the city.

The Playbook — OCONUS Edition
Same host nation, same SOFA rules as any Germany assignment — but your gaining unit and your housing office are Army, not Air Force.
Every family member needs the no-fee government passport before you fly, and your legal status runs under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement. Once you land, report to your gaining unit — 21st TSC, a subordinate brigade, or a tenant command — for sponsorship and in-processing.
This garrison runs its own housing office, separate from Ramstein's — on-post or on the economy, it's the mandatory first stop and it keeps you out of a bad German lease. German rentals routinely come without closets or kitchen fixtures; ask before you're surprised.
You can't legally drive here on your stateside license alone — every servicemember and command sponsor takes the USAREUR-AF driver's test to get certified for German roads. Study the signage; it fails plenty of confident drivers.
A PCS to Germany authorizes shipping one privately owned vehicle at government expense — the rest get stored, sold, or driven by family stateside. Decide before the movers show up. (Yes, the irony that the command running Army-wide distribution can't fast-track your own car isn't lost on anyone.)
