Mental health coverage for veterans.

Federal law requires every ACA-compliant health plan to cover mental health and substance use disorder care — the same plans VAB helps you find already include it. Here's what that actually means, and how it works alongside VA care.

What's covered.

Mental health and substance use disorder services are one of the ACA's 10 Essential Health Benefits — every ACA-compliant plan we help you find already covers this category.

  • Outpatient therapy and counseling
  • Psychiatric evaluation and medication management
  • Substance use disorder treatment
  • Inpatient mental health care

Exact copays, deductibles, and network details vary by the specific plan and carrier — a licensed advisor can walk through the real numbers once you start a quote.

VA Benefits

Works with your VA benefits.

Private mental health coverage that complements — never replaces — VA care.

VA + Private, together

VA mental health care and a private plan's mental health benefit aren't exclusive — many veterans use VA facilities for some care and private coverage for shorter wait times, a specific specialist, or family members who aren't VA-eligible.

TRICARE Bridge

Coverage options for veterans and families transitioning off TRICARE who want mental health benefits to continue without a gap.

Family coverage

A spouse or dependent who isn't VA-eligible gets the same Essential Health Benefit mental health coverage as the primary plan holder.

Straight answers

Mental health coverage, explained honestly

No — mental health and substance use disorder services are one of the 10 Essential Health Benefits every ACA-compliant plan is federally required to cover, and that includes VAB's Individual & Family health plans. This page exists because it's a real, specific question people search for, not because VAB sells a standalone mental health policy.

It's required. Under the Affordable Care Act, mental health and substance use disorder services are one of the 10 Essential Health Benefits every ACA-compliant individual and small-group plan must include — the same category as things like emergency care and prescription drugs. What varies by plan and carrier is the network, copay, and any prior-authorization steps, not whether it's covered at all.

Outpatient therapy, psychiatric care, and inpatient mental health treatment are all part of the Essential Health Benefit category, without a carve-out for how the condition originated — so PTSD treatment is covered the same as any other mental health condition. The VA's own service-connected disability and specialty PTSD care are a separate system worth using alongside private coverage, not instead of it; we don't administer VA benefits and can't speak to VA-specific eligibility.

That depends on the specific plan and carrier you enroll in — copays, deductibles, and session limits vary, and we're not going to guess at a number here that might not match your plan. A licensed advisor can walk through the real cost breakdown for the specific plans available to you once you start a quote.

They're not mutually exclusive. Some veterans use VA facilities for continuity of specialty PTSD or combat-related care and private coverage for shorter wait times or a specific provider outside the VA network; others use one or the other. This isn't medical advice — talk to your VA care team and, if you're weighing private coverage, one of our licensed advisors about how the two can work together for your situation.
