What Massachusetts adds

Your VA loan is federal — but Massachusetts adds its own layer of veteran benefits. Here's what to know, and where to verify the current terms.

Massachusetts runs the Chapter 115 program — a needs-based veterans benefit administered with cities and towns that is unique among the states.

Property tax exemptions are available for eligible veterans, with tiers for qualifying disabled veterans — administered locally, verify with your city or town and the Executive Office of Veterans Services.

Massachusetts does not tax military retired pay.

State benefits change — always confirm current terms with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Veterans Services.

The lay of the land

Greater Boston is a high-cost, low-inventory market; households assigned to Hanscom often weigh the close-in Lexington–Bedford area against more attainable towns along Route 495.
